Chromebooks FAQs 

The Riverside County Library System has made Chromebooks available to community members who need technology beyond the library walls.  RCLS is not responsible for any liability, damages or expense resulting from use or misuse of the device, connection of the device to other electronic devices, or data loss resulting from use of device. Any use of the device for illegal purposes, unauthorized copying of copyright-protected material in any format, or transmission of threatening, harassing, defamatory or obscene materials is strictly prohibited.

What are Chromebooks?

Chromebooks are lightweight laptops that run Google’s Chrome operating system. It must be connected to the internet for you to access its features, which are all web-based. Please see our Start-up Guide / Guia de Puesta en Marcha for assistance.


Who can check out a Chromebook?

Any Riverside County resident, at least 18 years of age and who has an active RCLS card in good standing, may borrow a Chromebook from any participating RCLS library. Please check with your local library for availability.  Limit one per household.   

Chromebooks are available on a first come, first-serve basis.  Chromebooks come in a case along with chargers.

 
How long can I check out a Chromebook?

You can borrow a Chromebook for (3) three weeks. 

Are Chromebooks renewable?

Chromebooks are not renewable.

Can I place a hold on a Chromebook?

Chromebooks cannot be placed on hold; however, if you call the library, you can place one on a 3-day hold.

Where can I return a Chromebook?

Chromebooks must be returned to the service desk of the RCLS location where it was borrowed. They may not be returned to bookdrops or other RCLS locations.

Will my documents or personal information stay on the Chromebook after I return it?

Although the Chromebook is configured to clear out all history and files once you end your session or log out, it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure you have removed any files, signed out of websites, cleared your history, etc. prior to returning the Chromebook.

What if I need help with the Chromebook?

You may be able to request help from library staff. Please call your local branch to find out dates and times.

What if I return a Chromebook late or lose It?

Chromebooks will be turned off if it is not returned on the due date. There will be a $0.25 late fine per day, with a maximum of $5.00, when returned.  
If the Chromebook is lost, please contact the location where you checked it out immediately. The replacement fee of $200 is the market value cost that RCLS charge to replace the Chromebook.

What if I damage or lose any of the components that come with the Chrombook?

Replacement fees for damaged, lost or stolen equipment:

  • Broken screen $100
  • Charging Cord $10
  • Wall Adapter $10
  • Chromebook Case $20
